THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/united kingdom

12/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - European Commission President José Manuel Barroso has sent a telegram, congratulating new United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron, and wishing him well in the “difficult choices” he will have to make in “difficult times”. “Many of the challenges ahead - delivering economic recovery, fighting global poverty, tackling climate change; ensuring energy security - are common across the European Union and require a common response,” he argued. “I look forward to working closely with you on these and other issues, such as boosting the internal market and promoting smarter regulation, more transparency and greater accountability in the European Union,” he added. Barroso hopes to meet Cameron in Brussels “in the near future”. In the new Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition governing the UK, Eurosceptic William Hague will hold the post of Foreign Secretary.
