12/05/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament civil liberties committee decided on Monday 10 May to send a request to the legal affairs committee with regard to a referral to the Court of Justice of the European Communities over comitology measures relating to surveillance of external maritime borders (FRONTEX). Former rapporteur on the text, Michael Cashman (S&D, UK) has called for the measures to be retained until the Court delivers its judgment. The Parliament's legal department also takes the view that the act should be maintained. At the end of March, Parliament, acting against the opinion of the civil liberties committee, adopted measures to govern surveillance of the EU's external maritime borders by the FRONTEX agency (see EUROPE 10106 and 10101).
