Brussels, 21/054/2010 (Agence Europe) - In a press release published on Tuesday 20 April 2010, the International Railways Union (UIC) explains that the railways have made every effort to increase capacity and help ferry passengers about who have been stranded at airports in Europe. The German, Spanish and French railways have introduced extra trains in recent days. In Germany alone, trains have been carrying 30% more passengers than normal. Demand has been very strong on international routes to cities in the west and cities like London and Paris, explains UIC. Similar increased demand has been witnessed on Danish railways (DSB) between Copenhagen and Berlin and Hamburg, in Norway (NSB) and the Net heralds (NS). In Spain, where airports are open again, Spanish train company RENFE has increased seating capacity on trains to Irun/Hendaye and trains between Madrid, Barcelona and Paris. On Sunday 18 April 2010, some 9,000 extra passengers were recorded on the Spanish rail network. In Italy, special trains were provided between Milan and Paris and between Rome and Paris, and the Eurostar high-speed rail network between France and the United Kingdom put on 10 extra trains on Sunday. From Saturday 17 to Tuesday 20 April, Eurostar carried 165,000 passengers, some 50,000 more than normal at this period of the year. On Monday 19 April alone, French rail company SNCF announced an extra 5,000 seats on trains between Paris and London. (A.By. trans fl)
