31/03/2010 (Agence Europe) - Olli Rehn is highlighting the fact that better economic governance requires core budget coordination and surveillance. In an interview to the French daily, Le Monde on 31 March, the Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs distinguished between short term action (sending the fire brigade to Greece), medium term (new Lisbon treaty instruments that enable the Commission to, “send member states warnings”. For the long term, he said they needed to examine all budgetary laws before they were finally adopted. In this connection, should, “rethink possible treaty amendments to strengthen economic governance and government”. With regard to reform of the Stability and Growth Pact, the most important things was to apply existing rules, explained the Commissioner, who added that, “the problem is not linked to the rules but to the fact that they have been not been respected appropriately”.
