Brussels, 24/03/2010 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission announced the five winners of the Sustainable Energy Europe Awards 2010, chosen from the 272 entries, on Tuesday 23 March, during European Sustainable Energy Week (22-26 March). The five were: - Solar.Now!, promoted by Rural Energy Foundation, Netherlands, in the Co-operation Programmes Category: the Solar.Now! Programme provides support and training to entrepreneurs in seven sub-Saharan African countries (Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia), helping them set up and develop renewable energy business; - Hungarian Schools Illumination Programme, promoted by Ministry of Education and Culture and General Electric Lighting, Hungary, in the Demonstration and Dissemination Projects Category: the Schools Illumination programme is retrofitting illumination systems in schools across Hungary, designing and using high-standard lighting and heating solutions to save energy and cut CO2 emissions; - Alternative Energy Program for Global Green Telecommunications, promoted by Alcatel Lucent, France, in the Market Transformation Category: Alcatel Lucent developed an integrated technology that replaces the need for diesel generators, enabling telecoms equipment to run on renewable fuel; - Sonne! Sonne! Sonne! / Sun! Sun! Sun!, promoted by WBN: Büro für Kommunikation GmbH, with solar cell manufacturers Sharp Solar and Q.Cells, Germany, in the Promotional/Communication and Educational Actions Category: to reach young people aged 13 to 24 and inform them about renewable energy and encourage CO2 reduction, solar cell manufacturers Sharp Solar and Q.Cells teamed up with MTV to create a humorous integrated campaign on TV and the internet; - ProjectZero, promoted by ProjectZero, Denmark, in the Sustainable Energy Communities Category: ProjectZero is a public/private initiative that aims to make the seaside city of Sønderborg (population 77,000) CO2 neutral by 2029.
