Students want new focus on Bologna reform

Brussels, 16/03/2010 (Agence Europe) - Student unions in Europe consider that the Bologna Process is not effective and call upon ministers in charge, who met in Vienna and Budapest last week, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Bologna Process and to give it new focus. Students adopted a declaration setting out their priorities. “In some national contexts, tuition fees have been implemented or student participation has been reduced, under the pretext of the Bologna Process. Consequently there is great confusion over what is actually 'Bologna'”, said Ligia Deca, Chairperson of the European Students' Union. The declaration calls on ministers to: 1) support the Bologna Process whist not allowing further confusion regarding the main goals and tools of the process; 2) ensure holistic, in-depth and financially supported continued implementation of all Bologna action lines, with special focus on the social dimension, mobility and student-centred learning; 3) provide intergovernmental solidarity to overcome the ill-effects of the two-speed Bologna implantation; and 4) ensure full student participation in all decision-making structures at national, regional and institutional levels.
