16/02/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 11 February, United States Ambassador to Belgium Howard Gutman called on Belgium to take in detainees from the Guantanamo prison camp. This would show that Belgium was helping President Barack Obama close the camp. In a speech delivered at the Cercle gaulois in Brussels Gutman added that he would suggest to Belgium that it increase its military presence in Afghanistan. His comments did not go down well with Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, who pointed out that it was for the Belgian government to make such decisions. “He (the ambassador) may make suggestions. But it is the Belgian government that will decide, in accordance with the majority view in the parliament,” he said. (V.L.B./transl.rt)
