Brussels, 25/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - As it promised at the last Agricultural Council on 18 January, the European Commission will give its response this week on the legal possibility of authorising the export of Community sugar without refunds above the WTO (World Trade Organisation) ceiling of 1.374 million tonnes. European beet producers are calling for the right to sell more sugar on the world market where demand is strong and prices high. They want a decision to be taken quickly to release stocks and to allow planters to plan their sowing for the next marketing year (2010-2011). In a letter sent recently to DG Agriculture at the Commission, the CIBE (International Confederation of European Beet Growers) says that Europe was the only part of the world to have had a good harvest in 2009-2010 and that it was perfectly normal that it play its part on the world market when prices were reaching very high levels.
