22/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 21 January, the European Parliament (EP) called on the Council to adjourn implementation of the EU/US agreement on the transfer of banking data (Swift), until MEPs have given their position on the matter, as stipulated in the Lisbon Treaty. “We have sent a letter to the Council calling on it to defer implementation of the agreement until 15 January”, Parliament President Jerzy Buzek (EPP, Poland) said after the conference of presidents of political groups, saying there would be a vote by the House on 9 or 10 February. The Council will, on Monday 25 January, forward the text signed end November 2009 to the EP (EUROPE 10060). Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Co-President of the Greens, said that, if the Council refused to bend before the will of the Parliament, the agreement could end on 9 February. (B.C./transl.jl)
