EPP says Malmström was to “vague”

Brussels, 20/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - MEPs Manfred Weber (Germany) and Simon Busuttil (Malta) from the EPP Group said on Tuesday 19 January that they regretted that “despite giving a good performance” in her hearing, Commissioner-Designate for Internal Affairs Cecila Malmström was “vague” on internal security and terrorism. They felt that she had put strong emphasis on fundamental rights, when they would have liked more concrete answers on issues such as cooperation among anti-terrorist authorities, police cooperation and the fight against organised crime and drug abuse. They said that she had to realise that there will be a separate portfolio of Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship, for which the commissioner-designate is Viviane Reding. “On the whole, Ms Malmström has our support. But she will need to come forward with concrete proposals very soon,” the two MEPs said. (B.C./transl.rt)
