Brussels, 15/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 15 January, a delegation of MEPs left for Italy to investigate the situation regarding hundreds of migrants who have recently been the victim of aggression in Rosarno, in the southern part of the country. Following serious incidents that took place on 7 January in that town, where migrant workers have been the target of racist attacks, over 700 migrants have been transferred to hosting and detainment centres in Crotone (Calabria) and Bari (Puglia). Last Sunday, the Italian minister for the interior announced that those found to be in an illegal situation would be expelled. A mission of European representatives, accompanied by Italian representatives and members of the Migreurop group, therefore went to Bari to the identification and expulsion centre and to a hosting centre in order to shed light on the circumstances of migrants' evacuation from Rosarno, the means available to migrants for upholding their rights, the conditions in which they have been taken in, and the prospects of their staying in Italy.
