Parliament threatens to reject Swift agreement

Brussels, 15/01/2010 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 15 January, the European Parliament warned that, if it did not receive additional information on the EU-US agreement concerning Swift, which was signed at the end of November 2009, the assembly could reject the text en bloc. So far, the Council has not provided any response to the letter sent in December by the president of the Parliament to the Swedish and Spanish EU Presidencies concerning the agreement, ALDE underlined, following a meeting of leaders of EP political groups. The Swift agreement aims to allow the United States to continue using European banking data held by the company Swift in its Terrorist Finance Tracking Programme (TFTP) (EUROPE 10044 and 10030). Guy Verhofstadt (ALDE, Belgium) indicated that all group leaders were of the same view that, if a reply were still wanting, the agreement could be rejected by Parliament. This theme is one of the items on the agenda of the Parliament plenary session next Wednesday, in Strasbourg. (B.C./transl.jl)
