Brussels, 15/12/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 15 December, the EU Council of Ministers adopted, without debate, conclusions on the possible future accession of the European Union to the Convention for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
In October, the Commission recommended that it would be in the interest of the European Union to become a full member of the CCSBT, especially in view of the similarities in the management of, and challenges facing, southern bluefin tuna and Atlantic bluefin tuna. In its conclusions, the Council agrees that it is desirable that the EU become a contracting party to the Convention. Consequently, it invites the Commission to request the contracting parties to the CCSBT to amend this Convention in order to enable the accession of the EU. The Council also asks the Commission to report back on further developments. (L.C./transl.rt)
