Commitment to conclude Round in 2010 confirmed

Geneva, 02/12/2009 (Agence Europe) - Towards the end of the afternoon of Wednesday 2 December, the Chilean Trade Minister Andres Velasco and the Director-General of the WTO, Pascal Lamy, closed the seventh ministerial conference of the WTO, sending out a message confirming the commitment of the 153 member countries to conclude the multilateral negotiations of the Doha Round on the liberalisation of world trade, but stressing the need to make clear progress on the outstanding dossiers over the coming months. "We have been able to bring together the political energy which we will need in order to conclude Doha", said Mr Lamy, pointing out that "major differences of opinion subsist". However, concluding in 2010 is "feasible", he added. Mr Velasco for his part stressed the centrality of the dimension of the Round. "We must imbue the agreement with the progress we have made over the last eight years", Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel had noted earlier in proceedings. (EUROPE will return to the last day of the Geneva conference in tomorrow's edition). (E.H./trans.fl)
