Brussels, 20/11/2009 (Agence Europe) - On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the UN convention on the rights of the child (UNCRC), held on Friday 20 November, the European Commission announced it would continue to defend high standards for the protection of rights of the child. “Despite the good work done in the past years, there is no room for complacency. The violations of children's rights in the EU and worldwide are still far too many”, the European commissioners for justice, Jacques Barrot, external relations, Benita Ferro-Waldner, and development, Karel De Gucht, state in a joint press release. During coming years, European Commission action will focus on priority areas: - violence against children, children in armed conflicts, unaccompanied minors (Roms), forced child labour and the trafficking of children. The European executive also announced that an assessment will be made in 2010 of the impact that various European measures have in the field of children's rights. The convention has been ratified by all countries of the world, including the 27 member states of the EU, except for the United States and Somalia. (B.C./transl.jl)
