Brussels, 18/11/2009 (Agence Europe) - As the heads of state and government meeting in Rome have pledged to "eradicate world hunger", which affects a billion human beings, COPA (Committee of Professional Agricultural Organisations) and COGECA (General Confederation of Agricultural Cooperatives of the EU) on Tuesday 17 November called for sufficient funds to be allocated to promote investments in the agricultural sector. The agricultural organisations of the EU pointed out that world food production will have to double by 2050 to respond to growing world demand for food. According to the secretary general of COPA and COGECA, Pekka Pesonen, it is vital to earmark enough money to fund a "future-proof" common agriculture policy (CAP). He adds that a number of producers from all sectors of European agriculture, particularly pork meat, cereals, olive oil, sugar beet and bovine meat, are currently faced with major difficulties (http://www.copa-cogeca.eu ).
