10/11/2009 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner Joaquín Almunia acknowledged that the Eurogroup had discussed the possibility of introducing taxation on financial transactions. This possibility, evoked again recently by Gordon Brown (EUROPE 10015), is one of the courses of innovative finances that the Commission has been entrusted with studying by the European Council. The form of such a mechanism (Tobin tax or a kind of insurance) is far from being acquired and eurozone ministers agree to discuss the matter again “in the coming months”, said Mr Almunia. Above all, this will require a global agreement in order not to create distortion on capital flows, he added, while the idea is clearly rejected by the United States. (A.B./transl.jl)
