Brussels, 29/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European regulation revising the environmental management and audit system (EMAS) in order to increase its notoriety and use by organisations wishing to improve their environmental performance (EUROPE 9875) has been adopted.
On Monday 26 October, without debate, the Council formally adopted the legislation which gives special attention to the needs of small organisations such as SMEs and local authorities. Their participation in EMAS will be encouraged by easier access to information and existing funds in order to help them, as well as by technical assistance measures. For the first time, EMAS will be open to participation by third country organisations that have an impact on the environment. (A.N./transl.jl)
