Brussels, 19/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - Spain's Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has said that his country will be taking in Guantanamo detainees, after speaking with US President Barack Obama at the White House on closing down the Guantanamo prison, at the US naval base in Cuba. “President Obama welcomed Spain's initiative”, the Spanish prime minister said, adding: “We are now seeking to determine the exact number to be taken in”. He went on to add: “Our support is unfailing. We are keen to support the promise made by President Obama to close Guantanamo prison down”. The United States called on Spain in June to take in four Guantanamo inmates. The camp in Cuba, where there are now 221 detainees, is not expected to close in January 2010 as planned. This week, the US House of Representatives authorised Guantanamo detainees to go to American soil to be tried. The draft budget for 2010 from the Department of Homeland Security prohibits current detainees from being transferred to the United States (…) except to be judged and only after the Congress has received a detailed plan of the risks involved.
