Brussels, 16/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN), the International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation against Torture (OMCT) expressed their grave concern in a joint press release on Thursday 15 October, given the rise in acts of harassment and intimidation against independent voices in the context of the electoral campaign for the legislative and presidential elections in Tunisia, to be held on 25 October. According to these NGOs, the authorities of this country are putting very great pressure on all persons who refuse to bend before “unanimism” (collective consciousness). They call on the Tunisian authorities to comply with the minimum guarantee conditions for such pluralism and especially to ensure a transparent and fair electoral process for all candidates, while honouring their international commitments with regard to human rights.
