The Council of Ministers of the European Union is restructuring its secretariat and providing it with a new directorate general, the symbol of a new goal in communication. The current French representative to the Political and Security Committee, Christine Roger, is due take over this body on 16 November. This new DG will include two directorates: (1) Communication and Media (director: Nicolas Kerleroux) and (2) Transparency and Archives (director: Cesira d'Aniello). At the same time, DG A (personnel, administration) will hold on to its director general, Vittorio Griffo, but he will also be attached to the director general for protocol, conferences, buildings and logistics, Leopold Radauer. The real head of protocol, this latter will benefit from the support of Dominique-Georges Marro, director of conferences, organisation and infrastructure. This internal reform is logical in itself and appears to be a first step towards strengthening the resources of the Council, which remains the poor relation in the European institutional communication family. This development will have to be managed efficiently in order to avoid impeding communication from the two other institutions and to preserve a quality news service. (O.J./transl.rh)
