14/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 14 October, the European Commission announced that additional aid of €2 million would be granted for Afghanistan. The funds will primarily be used for food assistance to the populations of northern Afghanistan, hit by severe flooding. One million euro from a budget of €35 million allocated to Afghanistan in April has, moreover, been earmarked for shelter and repairs to homes damaged during the floods. ECHO is responsible for managing the aid. The Community humanitarian aid agency has been active in Afghanistan since the agency's creation in 1992. In total, the Commission has provided €102 million in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan over the past three years. (O.J./transl.jl)
