29/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - The meeting organised by US President Barack Obama last week in New York between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas is a “very important step” towards relaunching Israeli/Palestinian peace negotiations “in coming weeks, hopefully before 15 October”, said External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, addressing the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee on Tuesday. “We all hoped for more but just getting the two in the same room was already a success”, said Ms Ferrero-Waldner speaking to MEPs as she took stock of the week in New York on the occasion of the UN General Assembly. “There is potential” for resumed talks between Israelis and Palestinians by mid-October, this also being the opinion of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, said Ms Ferrero-Waldner.
