THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/commission

18/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - Following a meeting at the French presidential palace, the Elysée, on Thursday 18 June between the leaders of European parties that stood in the European elections, co-chair of the Greens/EFA Group Daniel Cohn-Bendit explained that Nicolas Sarkozy had told them that morning that he would not be able to go to Brussels in July with a majority desire in his briefcase for José Manuel Barroso to continue as President of the Commission, and it was therefore not possible at present to arrange a rapid appointment. The Greens/EFA leader said the politicians had also discussed environmental issues and would be presenting Sarkozy with several suggestions for the upcoming meetings like the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen and environmental taxes. Cohn-Bendit said that Sarkozy wanted to meet with the leaders again before the Copenhagen Conference to work together and advance the recent climate package negotiated by the EU. Cohn-Bendit said that talks had been open and cordial, adding that constructive dialogue was a good thing. (O.J./transl.fl)
