Brussels, 18/06/2009 (Agence Europe) - Re-elected French Socialist MEP Pervenche Berès is calling on the European Summit to send a serious message about the gravity of the social and economic crisis in Europe. She explains in a press release that she expects the Commission to publish draft legislation revising the EU financial supervision system after the summer holidays, adding that the EP will ensure that the recommendations made by the group chaired by Jacques de Larosière are interpreted in as ambitious a manner as possible. In this connection, she urged Europe's leaders to work to ensure substantial financial and administrative resources are deployed to carry out effective and substantial supervision. On the economic crisis, Berès, who chaired the EP's economic and monetary affairs committee in the previous EP, said that the time for budget stabilisation had not yet arrived and that further efforts are required to ensure economic recovery. Questioning the European Council about the weak response to the social impact of the crisis, she warned against the longer term impact of the economic recession in terms of sharing wealth and impoverishment. She concluded that against this backdrop, putting José Manuel Barroso back at the head of the European Commission would be incomprehensible given his startling lack of pro-activity and voluntarism.
