THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/tribute

01/07/2008 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 2 July, Hans-Gert Pöttering, President of the European Parliament, will be visiting the house of Jean Monnet in Houjarray, Bazoches-sur-Gyonne, in the Yvelines. While there, he will participate, together with the family of Jean Monnet as well as the former president of the European Parliament and of the Italian Council, Emilio Colombo, in the inauguration of a conference hall that will henceforth bear the name of “Salle Hans-Gert Pöttering”. This day of tribute to Jean Monnet will close with a visit to the Panthéon at 4.30pm, when Mr Pöttering will go down into the crypt for a moment's quiet reflection before the tomb of Jean Monnet. The house in Houjarray, the birthplace of the edifice of Europe, is managed by the Jean Monnet Association created in 1982 on behalf of the European Parliament, which owns it. Each year, it hosts nearly 300 conferences and is part of a network with the other houses of Europe's founding fathers, as the vanguard for the development of European citizenship. (O.J./transl.jl)
