Paris, 01/07/2008 (Agence Europe) - “Notwithstanding the impasse in which we find ourselves, we shall try for positive results”, in particular on energy and the environment, as negotiations on the energy/climate package are “no picnic”, explained Nicolas Sarkozy during a press meeting in Paris. He said they also hoped to go “quite far” in other areas, such as sport, where there is talk of an exemption to the free movement of workers (Mr Sarkozy finds it “abnormal” that, in the name of free movement, a football club cannot keep a 14-year old boy that it has itself trained). On health matters, which do not come under European competence, it is possible to “work together” on childhood illnesses, cancer and Alzheimers, he said. When it comes to agriculture, the French president hopes the 27 will agree on a number of concepts, such as food safety and independence. Finally, taking advantage of rapprochement with NATO, he plans to take European defence forward. (A.B./transl.jl)
