05/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - UEFA has called in Europol in its investigation of 15 football matches involving eastern and southern European clubs, which it believes might have been fixed by Asian gangsters, the organisation's president Michel Platini has said, quoted in the weekly Welt am Sonntag on Sunday 2 December. According to Der Spiegel, clubs in Bulgaria, Georgia, Serbia, Croatia and the Baltic states are under suspicion. UEFA has suspicions over 26 matches, including three in the third preliminary round of the Champions' League, two in the EUFA Cup and one EURO-2008 qualifying match. It is thought that 15 of these matches took place during the current season and 11 during the period from July 2005 to November 2006. There is strong suspicion, too, over the Champions' League match on 6 November between Liverpool and Besiktas Istanbul, which the former won 8-0. A joint EU-UEFA conference on corruption and money laundering in sport will be held in 2008. (B.C.)
