05/12/2007 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 4 December, the European Commission announced that it was in discussion with EU member states to try to find a way to improve the protocol to the EU-Mauritania fisheries agreement. Some fishing possibilities are being under-used, thus posing problems for Community operators. The six-year agreement, which came into effect on 1 August 2006, provides 200 EU vessels with fishing possibilities for tuna, crustaceans (particularly shrimps), hake, cephalopods and other species such as anchovy and sardine in Mauritanian waters. The Commission hopes to resolve the matter very quickly and before the end of January 2008. (L.C.)
