24/01/2006 (Agence Europe) - As expected, the ECOFIN Council on Tuesday adopted conclusion on the quality of public finance and how they contribute to boosting growth and employment. The EU25 finance ministers asked the European Commission and the Economic Policy Committee (EPC) to continue assessing the EU budget rules and institutions and say greater attention must be paid to certain expenditure. They are asking Member States' statistical bodies and Eurostat to make greater efforts to ensure statistics are available. The EPC has been asked to help Member States improve the information they provide about their budget. The Council says the efficiency of public spending would also benefit from information about best practice.
