15/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, Eurochambres, which represents over 2,000 chambers of commerce and industry in 41 countries, has criticised the low turnout rates at the European elections, and suggests that in order to combat lack of interest on the part of the citizens, the EU should put 1% of its budget to communication. Eurochambres also calls upon the European Parliament to make the implementation of the Lisbon strategy one of its priorities, and calls upon the MEPs to ask the European Commissioners about their ideas on promoting growth and employment, at the forthcoming parliamentary hearings. Noting that the priority of the Dutch Presidency will be to lighten the administrative burden on business, Christoph Leitl, President of Eurochambres, said that European legislation should be judged according to its usefulness on the competitivity of European industry.
