15/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - Without debate on Tuesday, the EU Council of Ministers adopted the regulation establishing measures applicable for 2002 for the recovery of cod stocks in the Irish Sea (see EUROPE of 8 March 2001, p.10). The measures include provisions on the minimum mesh size, the minimum landing size for fish, periods when fishing is banned, the protection of other species, by-catch volumes and authorised rejects and the use of selective fishing gear. Access to areas like the Shetland Box and the Irish Box may also be banned or restricted. Financial aid is foreseen for encouraging ships to be taken out of service.
