07/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The Italian Radical MEP Marco Pannella has said that if the Italian Ulivo group (centre-left opposition coalition of a number of parties), or a sizeable majority of its members, followed its leader Francesco Rutelli in voting for the President of the Liberal group, Pat Cox, in the elections for the new President of the European Parliament on 15 January in Strasbourg, he would immediately propose that the Radicals in the Bonino List meet with Ulivo and Margherita (Ed: the other opposition group) to assess the potential for other important "liberal" regroupings in Italy itself. The Lista Bonino MEPs want to negotiate membership of the Liberal EP group chaired by Pat Cox, but so far, the Italian Lista Bonino MPs have opposed this (see EUROPE of 14 December, p.6).
