THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/convention

07/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission does not hold a position on the representation of EU Member States within the Convention that is to prepare the next reform of EU Treaties, said Commission spokesman Jonathan Faull, on Monday, regarding the Italian government's request to have another representative (other than Giuliano Amato who will second Valéry Giscard d'Estaing as Vice-President, with Jean-Luc Dehaene) at the Convention. After a meeting with his Belgian counterpart, Louis Michel, on Monday in Brussels, EU Council President Josep Piqué acknowledged there was divergence between positions held by Italy and Belgium on this subject and said the Spanish Presidency was planning to seek a compromise that would be satisfactory for everyone.
