THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/future of europe

08/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - Eurosceptic MEP Jens-Peter Bonde has published a press release in which, turning to the opening of the debate on Europe's future, in Brussels on 7 March (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.4), he protests against what he calls a "propaganda" exercise, in which his association "SOS-Democracy", would have liked to have participated to "provide students with a balanced view of the future of Europe". Nicole Fontaine was absent at the even at the European school because the same day she was receiving from the hands of the King of Spain the prize of the Correo Group for her actions against ETA. The EP was therefore represented by Vice-President David Martin, British Labour MEP. As for Reinhard Rack, Austrian member of the EPP/ED Group and rapporteur for the EP's Committee on Constitutional Affairs on "enlargement and institutional reform", he said that the EP must focus on the post-Nice process and be ready "in 2003 at the latest", to avoid that in 2004 (year of European elections and a new European Commission) two of the three institutions concerned not being able to fully function.
