THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/taiwan

08/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - The British Liberal Democrat Graham Watson, President of the European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee, questioned the Council and the European Commission over the information from the Danish press which, quoting a Danish civil servant, assert that the EU Member States have agreed not to grant visas to civil servants from the government of Taiwan. Could you explain the reasons for such a decision, since "Taiwan is a strong democratic State with amicable ties with the EU, while the Peoples Republic of China has repeatedly been criticised over its human rights violation?", asked Mr Watson.
