05/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - On 2 and 3 February, Thierry Cornillet, French member of the EPP Group in the European Parliament and EP rapporteur on the respect of fundamental rights, accompanied Parliament's "Racism and Discrimination" Intergroup, chaired by Fode Sylla (French member of the United Left Group), on a visit to El Ejifo, in Southern Spain, where last year immigrant workers had been subjected to very serious racist violence. Mr. Cornillet said that, in this affair, Article 1 of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights, which refers to "human dignity", do not seem be respected, "due to the living conditions experienced by workers in that area". Noting that the same type of problem occurred in France, Portugal, Italy, Greece "and elsewhere", Mr. Cornillet considers that, if necessary, measures should be taken to help companies ensure better living conditions for their seasonal workers.
