05/10/2000 (Agence Europe) - The United States rejected the regime proposed by the European Commission for resolving the dispute over the banana import regime (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.9), considering that it does not go far enough and that it does not comply with WTO rules. The Americans, however, remain open to seeking a satisfactory compromise. On the Latin-American side, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama reject the regime envisaged by the EU saying that it would cause a fall in prices and considerable export losses. Only Ecuador took a different stance. EUROPE will come back to these reactions.
