01/07/2016 (Agence Europe) - Brexit will not affect TTIP talks, Malmstrom stresses. “The decision of the British electorate to vote for Brexit will not change any aspect of the free-trade negotiations” between the EU and the United States (TTIP), the Commissioner for Trade, Cecilia Malmstrom, stressed in an interview with the radio station France Info, on Thursday 30 June (our translation throughout). “We are determined to continue these negotiations. They are important to Europe, to our economy, our jobs, our businesses and consumers, and it makes a lot of sense to do this, even if there are just 27 of us. The EU is the world's largest market. We will remain so, even without the UK”, she stressed. “The Americans are determined to continue the negotiations with us”, Malmstrom continued, reiterating that the aim was to conclude before the end of the term in office of President Barack Obama, in January of next year. “If possible, we will”, she added, stressing that at the European Council of 28 and 29 June, all member countries of the EU, including France, “[had] confirmed that the negotiations must continue”.
