28/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - EU calls for progress on rule of law. On Friday 24 October, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle called on the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) to make efforts to respond to concerns on the rule of law. During his meeting with FYROM's Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, Füle therefore underlined “the need for decisive action to be taken to address concerns about increased politicisation, freedom of expression and judicial independence”. Füle reiterated that it was the responsibility both of the government and the opposition to ensure that political debate takes place primarily in parliament, and to contribute to creating conditions for its proper functioning. He repeated the EU's concerns about the current stalemate in FYROM's process of accession to the EU. (CG)
