12/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - Guido Westerwelle calls for Mohamed Morsi's release. German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle called, on 12 July, for the deposed Egyptian president, Mohamed Morsi, to be released. He called for an end to “all restrictive measures” on Morsi's movements. When asked what the European position was on this, the spokesman for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton said “all political detainees must be released, and criminal cases reviewed swiftly in a transparent manner”. He went on to say that the EU is urging the “interim authorities to make every effort so that politically motivated arrests and other forms of harassment do not take place”. A spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry affirmed on 10 July that Morsi was in a safe place, that he was being treated with dignity and that, for now, he was not subject to any prosecution.
