Brussels, 12/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - Greek public television returned to the airwaves this week, a month after it was suddenly shut down by the government. The broadcaster ERT has been replaced by a new body, EDT, which started broadcasting on Thursday, although public broadcasting minister Pantelis Kapsis said on the Mega channel that this was simply a transition phase. EDT is only broadcasting repeats at the moment. Of the 2,700 ERT staff made redundant, 2,000 will join a new company, to be set up in the autumn. The sudden closure of ERT is highly controversial and has generated mass anger amongst staff, who continue to broadcast online with help from the Union Européenne de Radio-télévision (UER). The closure was justified as a way of reforming and slimming down the public broadcaster as part of the reform of the civil service demanded by the country's lenders. (EL/transl.fl)
