02/03/2010 (Agence Europe) - The president of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, has announced that he has decided to impose a financial sanction on the British UKIP representative Nigel Farage for showing no respect to the president of the European Council. In his press release, he explains that he had asked Farage to withdraw his remarks and to apologiser to Herman Van Rompuy, to the Belgian people and to his parliamentary colleagues. Farage refused. The Parliament president therefore decided to rescind Farage's right to ten days' daily allowance as an MEP, that is, about €2980 (this daily allowance for being present is in addition to the monthly salary). On 24 February, Farage had declared in plenary that Van Rompuy had the charisma of a “damp rag”. (O.J./transl.jl)
