THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/european council

12/10/2009 (Agence Europe) - Werner Faymann, Austrian Chancellor, takes the view that Tony Blair should not become the first permanent president of the European Council (under the Lisbon Treaty) because of the over-close links he has with the former US president, George W. Bush. “We need a candidate that is not for Bush but for Obama”, he said this weekend. Like Tony Blair, Faymann belongs to the Social-Democrat family. (H.B./transl.jl)
