Brussels, 24/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - Faced with an increase in immigration, EU member states have a common challenge to meet: adapt their education systems to meet what is happening in society. This is one of the key messages received in a public consultation conducted by the European Commission on the issue of migration and education in a Green Paper entitled, Immigration and mobility: Challenges and opportunities for EU education systems' and which was open until December 2008 (EUROPE 9696). Following the consultation, contributions stressed that it was necessary to better coordinate social and education policies, focus more on fairness and equal opportunities in schools, organise awareness campaigns in schools to fight against segregation and introduce positive discrimination into schools together with the means to obtain the best results. Most contributions underline that the European Union can play a major role in supporting member states' efforts to develop appropriate policies in this area. (I.L./trans/rh)
