WTO says protectionist slippage since April is limited

Brussels, 17/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - In its third report on the development of trade policies in its member states during the economic and financial crisis, which was jointly prepared by the OECD and UNCTAD for the G20 summit on 24-25 September in Pittsburgh, the WTO stated that there had been limited protectionist slippage since the G20 summit in London on 2 April (EUROPE 9871 for a look at second report). In the introduction to the WTO directors' report, Pascal Lamy and Angel Gurria from the WTO and Supachai Panitchpakdi from UNCTAD noted that over recent months, G20 governments have refrained from over reliance on restrictive measures in trade and investment. They have, however, continued, in a limited way, to apply non-tariff instruments that have hindered trade flows and most of them have also continued to use trade defence mechanisms that may delay a return to growth. Among some of the measures accused of protectionism, the WTO has criticised the reintroduction by the EU and US of export subsidies for milk products. The report reveals that the disparity between the trade in goods and the flow of investment is expected to reach 10% for the former and between 30 and 40% for the latter in 2009. The report also calls on G20 leaders to put their appeals into practice by concluding the Doha Round in 2010.
