Brussels, 16/09/2009 (Agence Europe) - Representatives of member state governments that have Opel plants on their territory (Germany, Belgium, Spain, Hungary, Poland, United Kingdom) met in Berlin on Tuesday 15 September to discuss conditions for restructuring the European branch of General Motors, in the context of its takeover by Canadian Magna and Russian Sberbank (EUROPE 9976). Berlin is suspected of favouring German interests in the Opel dossier in exchange for the promise of €4.5 billion in state aid in the form of guaranteed loans, of which €1.5 billion has already been granted. According to a press release from the German Ministry of Economics, all countries with Opel sites will seek to set in place a base for a common financing plan. It will then, however, be necessary to wait for Magna to present its recovery plan on 7 October. (E.H./transl.jl)
