Brussels, 06/08/2009 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 6 August, the European Network against Racism (ENAR) and ENAR-Hungary declared that they were “deeply concerned” by recent events involving the Roma in Hungary. On 3 August, a shooting occurred involving a Hungarian Roma woman and her 13-year old daughter. The woman died instantly and her daughter is seriously injured. In a press release, ENAR strongly condemned the attack, “this murder is the latest in a series of targeted attacks against Roma in Hungary, which reflects the emergence of a climate of hatred directed against Roma minorities in Hungary”. ENAR asserted that it strongly condemned, “this violent attack” and called 'on the Hungarian government to undertake a rigorous investigation and to treat this attack as a suspect hate crime. If it is found to be a hate crime, it should be prosecuted as such”. The organisation also called for an investigation into the links between the Hungarian Guard/Jobbik and the violent incidents against the Roma community across Hungary. Anita Novak, ENAR-Hungary's national coordinator indicated that, “the political parties must take these heinous crimes seriously and not get involved in a political word game. Today, it is the Roma, but who knows who will be the victim tomorrow. The whole of society is in danger”. (B.C./trans/rh)
