EU calls for restraint from Nigerian authorities in repression of Boko Haram attacks in north of country

Brussels, 03/08/2009 (Agence Europe) - The European Union is deeply concerned over the recent violence in Northern Nigeria, including attacks by militants from the Boko Haram Islamist sect, says the Swedish Presidency of the EU in a press release issued on Monday 3 August. The EU deplores the loss of life caused by these confrontations.

While recognising the right and obligation of the Nigerian government to uphold peace and security within its territory, the EU trusts that the authorities will show restraint in the use of force and respect human rights, the statement goes on.

The EU calls for a quick return to normality and will continue to closely follow the developments, the statement says. (A.N./transl.rt)
