Brussels, 30/07/2009 (Agence Europe) - Denouncing the human rights violations committed in Honduras since the coup that overthrew President Manuel Zelaya at the end of June, the International Federation of Human Rights Leagues (IFRM) has called on the European Union to suspend the preferential access to the European market enjoyed by a number of Honduran products under the general system of preferences GSP+. This system demands compliance with social and good governance requirements. The IFRM was part of a delegation of 19 organisations which, last week, monitored the current human rights situation in Honduras. It denounces the infringements of human rights by the de facto government in place, such as maintaining the state of emergency without any real legal basis, illegal and arbitrary arrests and detention, and restrictions on the freedom of the press.
